Evelyn

Evelyn was born in Austin, Texas, in 1940. She worked as an elementary school teacher for thirty-five years and dedicated her life to helping children learn. She was married for forty-two years and has three children and six grandchildren. After living alone became difficult, she decided to move to Belmont two years ago. She chose Belmont because she loved the quiet library, the garden, and the friendly staff. Evelyn grew up in a small neighborhood where everyone knew each other. Both of her parents were teachers, and she says that “education was not an option; it was a way of life.” She studied Education at the University of Texas. Her family culture has always been very important to her. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, she still bakes her mother’s pecan pie recipe. Evelyn was raised Methodist and continues to attend the weekly prayer circle at Belmont. Evelyn feels that her life’s work was about showing children they were capable of more than they believed. To her, being human means choosing kindness even when it costs you time. “We’re here to care, not to rush”
