Sam

Sam was born in 1932 in Brooklyn, New York. His parents moved to the U.S. from Poland. He grew up in a close Jewish neighborhood where everyone knew each other. When he talks about it now, you can tell he really misses that strong sense of community. Sam served in the US Army during the Korean War. When he came back, he went to college, which made his parents super proud. He became an accountant and later started his own small business. He worked really hard and focused on giving his family a stable and comfortable life. After his wife passed away, Sam moved to Texas in 2015 to be closer to his daughter. He says he misses the energy of New York: the noise, the busy streets, and how something was always going on. But over time, he says he’s learned to slow down and enjoy the quiet moments more. His Jewish faith is still really important to him. He keeps a menorah in his room and celebrates Hanukkah with his family. When he feels well enough, he goes to a local synagogue. He also taught his kids to always write thank you notes.. When we asked him what it means to be human, he said, “To keep faith in people, in love, and in tomorrow”
